Hi everyone! Have you ever heard of something called Hippotherapy? It is a form of Therapeutic Horseback Riding (THR) used by licensed health professionals to treat individuals who have impaired postural control and coordination. Hippotherapy is also known as equine therapy which is the therapeutic use of horses. Hippotherapy is beneficial to those with autism, speech delay, down syndrome, behavioural disorder, learning difficulties, cerebral palsy and ADHD. There are so many advantages of hippotherapy such as: Relaxing tight muscles Building muscle strength Improving fine motor coordination Sharpening hand/eye coordination Improvements in Posture & Flexibility Improving Communication (improving one’s ability to breathe makes it easier for a person to speak) Gaining self-control Gaining self-confidence Improving concentration Improving concentration (especially for those who have difficulty staying on task with activities) Improving socialization
Equine therapy will give those with these disorders a sense of themselves whilst increasing their contact and interaction with their surroundings. This therapy method is also to help riders walk, talk, connect, focus, behave and learn, inspiring each one to live life as fully, productively and independently as possible. The horse’s three-dimensional movement provides sensory stimulation to muscles and joints, impacts the balance and movement sense detected by sensory receptors in the inner ear, and provides varied tactile which are touch experiences when the client rubs or pats or hugs the horse, feels the heat from the horse’s body and feels the effects of the natural environment such as wind or sun. The therapist can address communication goals by asking the rider to follow simple or multi-step directions. Interviews with parents indicated some significant improvements in social responsiveness, sensory response, and adaptive behaviours in home, school, and playground settings. According to the parents, children in the program showed better listening skills, became less stubborn or sullen, showed more confidence during participation in leisure activities, played and interacted more appropriately
